Jim Baen has Passed Away

June 28, 2006, Jim Baen crossed the Bifrost, depriving us of a great publisher and editor. He passed quietly, in his sleep after a massive stroke on 15, June. I wish I could thank him for the many hours of fine reading he was responsible for with the books he had published. Jim Baen left a legacy of good solid Science Fiction and a group of authors such as John Ringo and Mike Z. Williamson and David Drake as his legacy. Good job, Jim, you will be missed.

A Clockwork Orange- Anthony Burgess

I've been re-reading some of my old favorites. I recently re-read A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess. This is a story of social engineering and gang violence. Ironically, other than a bit of hyperbole as far as the social engineering aspect is concerned,. the story is still relevant. It's all about freedom and how sometimes, with the best of intentions, social engineering and behavioral programming can lead to disaster. Such is the "Law of Unintended Consequences"!

By the way, the origin of the Title is a cockney slang: "As phony as a clockwork orange". Read the book and you will understand the metaphor
